Mark Beckett Gallery

Mark Beckett
The club was delighted to welcome Mark along tonight who travelled up from Bude in Cornwall to give us a demonstration.
Square turning ?
Mark kicked off with a square edged dish mounted on a screw chuck.
The dished side
He then turned it around and mounted in the chuck C jaws.
The sanding sequence.
Mark uses Yorkshire grit sanding paper to stat with working up the grades and carefully uses a power sander on the edges.
Carefully does it !!
The secret of sanding the square edges is to keep your fingers well away and angle the sanding disc downwards using the trailing edge.
The outer edge
Mark pointed out the the gouge should be brought in from the outside and not inside out to avoid break out.
Ready to finish
Mark uses wax finish applied with paper towel.

Tea time
I'm sure that tea will arrive soon !!!
After tea
Marks second demonstration was turning a wooden stem for a wine glass
The blank
Mounted between centres the blank was turned to a cylinder.
Drilling
A hole was then made in the centre using a drill mounted in the tail stock, a slow speed is recommended for this operation.
Fitting
The inside of the drilled hole was cut away and shaped to accept the glass stem.
Shaping
Mark used a template to assist in the shaping of the stem.
The completed stem
Sanded and waxed to a fine finish.
Glass cutting
A Dremel fitted with a diamond cutting disc was used to cut off the base I think it surprised us all how easy and straight the cut turned out.
Fitting the glass
Two part epoxy resin is used to fix the glass to the stem.
All done
A very informative demonstration.
