Steve James Demonstration.
Tonight we where treated to a demonstration by Steve James who travelled up from Cornwall to enlighten us on colouring with paint so no shavings to clear up tonight !!.
Starting the process..
Steve brought along some turnings he made beforehand to save time. He mounted the turning and protected the lathe with some cardboard,
The base coat.
Steve spray painted the item with ebonising lacquer making sure it was completely covered.
The boundaries.
He them etched out two lines to form the boundaries for the painting.
The pallet.
He had a mixing pallet rather like a egg poaching tray, as the paint medium is clear when decanted he marked each trough with the colour to identify them.
Applying the paint.
He mixed the paint with a flow medium ( Josonja )
to thin it down and applied it in blobs by brush.
Compressed air.
Steve moved the paint around using an air brush
( less the paint ! ) and then passed it around so members to see the effects.
Second item.
Steve mounted a second prepared turning and applied paint literally all over the surface.
Rub it in.
He then rubbed the paint in with a brush to help with the final effect.
Cling film.
He covered the item with cling film whilst still wet and pressed it around all squishy like !!.
Drying.
Steve used a hair dryer to cure the paint.
Great effects.
This is one he made earlier to show the variety of effect that can be achieved.
Another blank.
A third blank was mounted on the lathe and paint applied in a star shape, using an inflated balloon
( Steve insisted that 7psi was the correct pressure for the balloon ) he pressed the balloon onto the wet paint and you can see the effect in the picture.
All around.
At the completion the item looked spectacular !
Selection.
These are items that he brought along to show us the different finishes that can be achieved.
Polishing.
Using a soft buffing wheel with carnauba wax applied he polished one of the items to a high gloss.
